Promotion of Bilinguism : SONAMINES Plays its Part

SONAMINES teamed up with the national community on Friday, 02 February 2024 to carry out activities marking Cameroon National Bilingualism Week.
The staff of the National Mining Corporation (SONAMINES) gathered in a cheerful atmosphere to celebrate the 19th Edition of the National Bilingualism Week placed under the theme: "Bilingualism: a vector od Digitalization of Education and the Promotion of Civic and Moral Values for a Peaceful and Emergent Cameroon". It was an opportunity to review and discuss bilingualism through Law 2019/019 of 24 December 2019 on the promotion of official languages in Cameroon, a legal instrument that attests to the pressing need to strengthen the use of English and French. This working session had the merit of highlighting the rights and obligations of Cameroonians in the promotion of official bilingualism nationwide.ième édition de la semaine du bilinguisme sous le thème : « Bilinguisme : vecteur de digitalisation des enseignements et de la promotion des valeurs civiques et morales pour un Cameroun pacifique et émergent ». L’occasion était toute donnée, pour faire le tour sur la question du bilinguisme au travers de la loi n° 2019/019 du 24 décembre 2019, portant promotion des langues officielles au Cameroun ; instrument juridique qui atteste de l’impérieuse nécessité, de renforcer l’usage de l’anglais et du français. Cette séance de travail a eu pour mérite, de mettre en exergue, les droits et obligations des camerounais dans le domaine de la promotion du bilinguisme officiel au niveau national.
Through this event conducted by Alice MBAFOR, Head of Translation at SONAMINES and chaired by the Deputy General Manager, Fru Johnathan, the audience was given insights into the history of official bilingualism in Cameroon, the various laws governing it and the creation of the NCPBM (National Commission for the Promotion of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism). CNPBM (Commission Nationale pour la Promotion du Bilinguisme et du Multiculturalisme).
It was a highly appreciated moment for the Head Office staff, who took part in the quiz game and the discussions, under the watchful eye of the Deputy General Manager, who grasped the opportunity to encourage the staff in reinforcing the practice of bilingualism within the institution and at a personal level, especially with regard to English, as it remains the preferred language in the mining sector.
SONAMINES, which has an internal structure responsible for translation, interpretation and the promotion of official languages, headed by a professional, will spare no effort in building the capacity of its staff.
